History
The instructional objectives of the department are to foster students' English ability in listening, speaking, reading and writing. This department was established in 1999 and currently, there are 18 full-time teachers and approximately 450 students. Currently, we have 18 full-time teachers, including 3 professors, 2 associate professors, 11 assistant professors, and 2 lecturers. In addition, the department also offers courses in literature and culture to enhance students' profound humanistic qualities and to broaden perspectives on the culture and civilization of Western countries with a view to promoting competitiveness in employment after graduation. After students in this department possess fluency in English and discipline in humanities, they can move towards employment, further studies, and study abroad after graduation. Besides engaging in English teaching and academic research, students can also serve in industries such as business, communication, and translation.

The Department’s core mission is to mold students into modern citizens with foreign language proficiency, professional and international perspectives, and critical thinking skills. The educational goals of the Department include:
- To educate students with professional knowledge in interdisciplinary fields, including TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language), interpretation and translation, linguistics, and literature and culture.
- To train students with the essential English skills of listening comprehension, effective speaking, and reading and writing, with the development of critical thinking and communication skills.
- To offer students opportunities to learn in a collaborative way with the ultimate goal of pursuing an innovative life-long education.
- To develop students' language and computer skills.

Facility
The Department currently has five labs which are installed with multimedia and audio-visual. In the second semester of the academic year 2006, a seminar room and a digital language learning room were also established. Additionally, several LCD projectors, computers with printers, and CD players are available for instruction, research, and administrative purposes. Software, including English teaching videotape/recording tapes and a variety of teaching programs which covers professional English teaching, classical literature, Shakespeare, and international movies, is available. Regular purchase of updated and additional audio-visual aids and books is under way.
Career Development
Future work / study prospects for students may include:
- Advanced studies: Students may choose to continue their studies in either domestic or foreign graduate programs to obtain master’s or doctoral degrees. Students are empowered with strong language training, as well as a general knowledge regarding cultural contexts in European and American societies, which will yield greater advantages for advanced study abroad.
- Employment: Students may develop their careers in fields such as British or American culture and educational studies, translation, writing, tourism, journalism, secretarial administration, international trade, mass communications, computer and multimedia production, and so on.

Equipment
The department currently has five classrooms which are installed with multimedia and audio-visual equipment; namely, “a computer multimedia design and language learning room,” “a multimedia audio-visual room,” “an independent study room,” “a multi-purpose resource room” and “a language studies audio-visual room.” In the second semester of the academic year 2006, a seminar room and a digital language learning room were also established. Software, including English teaching videotape/recording tapes and a variety of teaching programs which cover professional English teaching, classical literature, Shakespeare, and international movies, is available; as well as assorted audio-visual language teaching materials for students to use in class. Regular purchase of updated and additional audio-visual aids and books is under way.
Future Prospects
Future work/study prospects for students may include:
- Advanced studies: after graduation, students may choose to continue their studies in either domestic or foreign graduate programs to obtain master’s or doctoral degrees according to individual needs. Students are empowered with strong language training, as well as a general knowledge regarding cultural contexts in European and American societies, which will yield greater advantages for advanced study abroad.
- Employment: after graduation, students may develop their careers in fields such as British or American culture and educational studies.As to cooperation with off-campus institutes, in partnership with Cave Book Store publishing, the department has signed the “Career Development and Incubation Projects in Taiwan Universities and Colleges.” Students who complete these training sessions will be recommended to work in children’s American English instructional institutes.
- Professional certification: before graduation, students are required to pass one of many English proficiency tests recognized by the Ministry of Education (TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS, GEPT, etc.). In order to encourage students to successfully complete proficiency tests, the university has initiated an incentive program for students who will pass these language tests that allow them to apply for a study subsidy and academic bonus.
Curriculum

Professional English knowledge, including training in linguistics, English language instruction, translation, interpretation, etc.

Applied professional knowledge, including training in the practical areas of commerce and trade, business management, mass media and communication, the hospitality industry, etc.

Computer science and information technology, including training in multimedia technologies, software design, and applications.

Humanities discipline, including the development of students to appreciate European and American history, culture, and literature.
The department also has three additional feature domains: (a) English teaching, (b) translation and interpretation, and (c) multimedia teaching. To secure a certificate, students must complete a series of feature domain courses considered electives prior to graduation.
